This September, I’m turning 50. To mark this milestone, my husband and I are embarking on a trip we’ve dreamed about for years—an ocean cruise through the Greek Isles, followed by a week immersing ourselves in the ancient grandeur of Athens.
For me, this celebration feels like coming full circle. Some of my earliest fascinations with history and mythology were sparked by the stories of the Greek gods. Travel was a luxury my family couldn’t afford growing up, so my world expanded through the aisles of the local library instead. It was there that I first escaped to faraway places, fostering a lifelong love for the histories and adventures I could discover in books. Our first trip to Europe was for our 20th anniversary back in 2016, a journey that sparked a passion for regular European adventures that has continued ever since.
As a travel advisor, I plan dream trips for others every day, but planning your own celebration brings a whole new level of reflection. It got me thinking about what truly elevates a trip from a simple vacation to a cherished, once-in-a-lifetime celebration.
What Elevates a Trip to a “Celebration”?
The ultimate luxury in travel is not opulence, but the elimination of logistical friction. For a milestone trip, you want to be a joyful participant, not a stressed-out trip manager. A true celebration is defined by seamless logistics that allow you to focus on what truly matters: marking the moment with the people you love.
For our own trip, Greece had always been on my bucket list, but I could never decide between the islands for a beach vacation or Athens for a history-focused trip. The solution was a combination: a Virgin Voyages cruise that covers a perfect island itinerary, followed by a week on land in Athens. It’s a wonderful balance, as my husband is more of a city guy, while I’m happiest on a beach. This structure allows us to enjoy both, together.
Choosing Your Stage: Our Shortlist
Of course, every great celebration starts with dreaming up the possibilities. Before we landed on Greece, a few other incredible (and very different) destinations were on our personal shortlist. Each offers a compelling vibe for a milestone celebration:

- The Grand European “Heritage Tour”: One of our top ideas was an ambitious multi-country journey to trace our roots. My own heritage is almost entirely Scottish and English, while my husband’s is Spanish. We envisioned a trip that would start with the historic romance of Edinburgh and the dramatic landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, move on to the global energy of London, and finally end in the sun-drenched modernism of Valencia. It was a beautiful way to imagine connecting with our own histories, together

- The Epic Trans-Pacific Crossing (NYC to Sydney): We also dreamed about a true “trip of a lifetime.” We found a 32-day Princess Cruise that sailed from New York City all the way to Sydney, Australia. The idea of that much uninterrupted time to disconnect and see the world together was incredibly appealing. It was a big stretch, and getting that much time away would have been a real challenge for both of us, but for a major milestone, it was definitely on the table.
The Mythic Horizons Approach to Planning

When I’m planning any trip—whether my own or for a client—my philosophy starts with a foundation of impeccable quality and proven value. My non-negotiable starting point for any property I recommend is proven excellence. This is why my research process always begins with properties that achieve near-perfect guest reviews—a cumulative 8 out of 10-star rating is the absolute minimum standard I accept for my clients (and myself).
This data-driven approach ensures a baseline of pristine quality and exceptional service, whether the property is a charming boutique hotel or a top-tier luxury resort. This same hands-on research applies to the suppliers I partner with. For my own cruise, for example, I chose Virgin Voyages. As a travel advisor, it’s crucial for me to personally vet the suppliers I recommend. Since Virgin is an adults-only line, I wanted to experience it for myself before I suggest it to my clients who travel without kids.
Anticipation and the Perfect Moment
As I get ready for my own adventure, I’m reminded of why I do this work. I find myself dreaming of specific moments—the feel of the warm ocean, exploring the beautiful islands. But most of all, I am looking forward to standing at the Acropolis with my husband, holding his hand, and hopefully watching the sun set over the sea.
That feeling of anticipation, of knowing you’re about to create a memory that will become a cornerstone of your story, is something everyone deserves to experience. Your love story is unique. Your celebration should be too.
